Film Location Scouting Tips

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

When choosing film locations think of the best area of Los Angeles to be in logistically and focus your efforts on that area. Limiting your choices is a good idea or you will be scouting around for weeks. Another great tip especially for those on a budget is to stick to one single very diverse location to save money and transportation time. You may set up a base camp and spend the entire day in this location.

Be realistic about the location. Sure, you may want to shoot in Beverly Hills film location but, unless you know the owner of the location, finding an affordable location is difficult. One of the very first things to consider during location scouting is the shoots budget. No matter what type of shoot you’re doing there should be a set budget. What happens when you’ve found the perfect location to shoot a scene but have also found that it’s unaffordable and the owner isn’t willing to negotiate a lower rental price? I’ll tell you what happens, everyone is meant with disappointment because missing that one scene that could have been perfect might be responsible for throwing the entire movie, video, or commercial off track.

Don’t forget the permit. If you are shooting a film location in Los Angeles, do not assume Film LA covers every area. They don’t. Each area in Los Angeles tends to have a unique permitting situation and some are more rigid and more expensive than others.

Lastly, arrange a tech scout of the film location with the Director, Assistant Director, Director of Photography, Production Designer/Art Director, Producer. If you’re working with an experienced team, they should all know what they’re looking for. Some questions you may include asking about location power, camera and light placement, changing light bulbs in the existing lamps with our own, swapping paintings in a room, or rearranging furniture, YOU should be asking about rooms to keep actors (their own private hide-out), an additional “green room” for crew and equipment, an area for “craft services.”

Los Angeles offers Wonderful Film Locations!

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Los Angeles has wonderful film locations that can be used in numerous ways in your next film.
Whether it is for a documentary, filming commercials, or a feature film, you can find a variety of
shooting locations in Los Angeles known as the the Entertainment Capital of the World.

When it comes to producing professional productions in Los Angeles whether it be a reality series,
commercial, feature film, or tv sitcom, the filming location the director selects can make the difference
between a product that is subpar and one which will be taken seriously. The location must have the space
as well as other required amenities and most importantly plus be easily accessible for everyone involved.
Here is a tips when scouting for a film location.

You’re casting your film with actors who have a lot of character, so why not find locations with character, too?
Don’t list generic locations like a bookstore or a restaurant; go with specific settings that will be memorable
to your audience, such as a quaint boutique bookstore or a French café with a patio overlooking a park.
Does your lead character live in a small, messy apartment or a lavish house on gated grounds with an
Olympic-sized swimming pool?
Secondly, this sounds like a superfluous luxury for a filmmaker on a budget, but if you take the trouble to be a little picky,
it can really raise the production value of the movie and save you money in the long run. For instance, when you have
little-to-no money to spend on production design and set dressing, it’s incredibly valuable to have a location that already
suits the aesthetic you are looking for. The less a location needs to be camera-ready, the greater the savings on art
department materials and labor. This kind of fringe benefit also extends to the camera department, who may
have to light around awful paint jobs or lighting that just gives the wrong mood for the scene.

All Pictures Media is a location agency representing locations across the L.A and offers a vast selection. You will find stills,
